Issue #1: Highlights: ALE Free Trade Treaty signed, Scottish and Irish dispute, Latinia holds elections under pressure, Angwein protest Greek as lingua franca

ALE Free Trade Treaty: England, Latinia, Scotland, Wales, Mivorga, Angwein and Greece sign new trade deal

Diplomats from the various countries have signed the deal

England, Latinia, Scotland, Wales, Mivorga, Angwein and Greece- The ALE (Angwein-England-Latinia) Free Trade Treaty has been signed by seven nations.

The treaty got it's name by the nations who started negotiating the deal in 2009, when Angwein, England, and Latinia convened in Roma to start negotiations.

The treaty, which was also negotiated for 7 years, will allow greater freedom of business between the signatory nations, as with greater facility of investment and reduction of tariffs.

Supporters of the deal said that the deal will lead to greater economic growth, and better and easier trade with the seven signatories.

Critics say that the deal will lead to the reduction and/or stagnation of wages, lowering of working condition standards, and protect and prefer bigger businesses over smaller ones, leading to local businesses to suffer. They also argue that the deal will let foreign companies and investors invest in so-called "necessity" public companies, such as electricity and water authorities, something that two signatories, Latinia and Scotland, do not allow, in order to make a profit.

The signatories and their supporters deny these claims, however, saying that the treaty "still ensures the wellbeing of the people and regulations as before".

Upon the signing of the deal, many stock markets across Azrovia went up, most notably in Wales, where the WSME went up by 9 points. However, a dramatic response was seen in the nation where the signing took place, in Greece, where Greek protesters rioted in Athens.

Scottish-Irish dispute: Armies scuffle in the border

Irish troops clashed with Scottish soldiers after one of them apparently crossed the border

Scottish-Irish Border- Around 73 Scottish and 70 Irish troops have engaged in a scuffle across the border, moments after Ireland protested the construction of a Scottish outpost very close to the border.

In a suspected defiant move, a Scottish soldier who was on construction duty crossed an unfenced section of the disputed border. Ireland, thinking this as an incursion on it's territory, sent troops to shoot the rebellious enemy unit, and fighting soon ensued.

Scotland has protested the battle, calling the Irish response "crazy, demental, and over-the-top". Ireland, in response, has called it's action justified, at least legally, saying that "the border disputes have forced the Republic of Ireland to declare the section at high alert". Ireland has also called on Scotland to prosecute the soldier for the provocation of the battle.

Soon after, Scottish presence on the border went up from 15,000 troops to 20,000 troops. Ireland retaliated, closing the entire border with Scotland for 3 days.

England has called on both nations to "calm down, and resolve the dispute once and for all". Wales, a neighboring nation, has expressed concern for the scuffle, fearing further instability in the region. However, on the dispute issue per se, it expressed it's neutrality.

Latinian Elections: Latinia to hold elections despite recent violence and tensions

The Latin Legion has been patrolling polling stations across the Empire, after Conservative and Liberal supporters clashed in various cities, including in the capital, Roma

Latinia- Despite recent violence, neither the Emperor or the Consul has postponed the general elections.

Worries for electoral violence are rising since Conservative and Liberal supporters clashed in various cities, including in Roma. In some cities, like Aeter, clashes turned lethal, as opponents wielded guns and knives, fighting in the streets. The Latin Legion had to be activated to guard peace in the areas affected, and authorities fear tensions between other parties, such as the Greens or Socialists, might also follow suit and explode.

Furthermore, the Latin Legion and the Internal Legion (AKA military police) have been guarding polling stations across the Empire. Latin citizens' feelings were mixed: some are afraid of violence, while other Latins feel safe with the armed forces and police around.

This has not affected the government's expected turnout, however, as voting in Latinia is compulsory anyway.

Angwein: Angwein protest Greek as lingua franca

Tens of thousands have opposed Greek as the diverse nation's lingua franca

Mitropoli, Angwein- A coalition of Kazakh nationalists, Uzbek and Tajik minorities have protested Greek as the nation's lingua franca.

While the two groups differ on a new lingua franca, they concede that Greek is a symbol of aggressive foreign influence (as both Latinia and Greece tried to conquer the territory in ancient times, but extensively traded with ancient Angwein anyways), that it is too hard to learn and not very usable in practical life, despite it being the language of government and sometimes communication between minorities.

The nationalists prefer Kazakh, the language of the majority Kazakhs, whilst minorities lean towards English or an unrelated to Angwein, plus easy to learn language.

In defiance, supporters of Greek lead a counter-protest in the language, waving Angwein, minority and Greek flags.

Police reported that, most of the time, protests were peaceful, and that the only aggression was verbal. It never escalated to physical violence.

War! Azobyr invades Northwestern Mivorga!

The Azobyr-Mivorgan War: a spark of nationalist global conflict?

Azobyr and Mivorga- The unthinkable has happened.

And no one saw it coming. No one even thought it would be possible.

The Republic of Azobyr, under it's new nationalist government, has declared war on the Principality of Mivorga.

Around 10,000 highly-trained troops have broken defense lines on the border, and are invading Mivorga's northwest. The Mivorgan Army, in comparison, has a defense of 20,000 troops, in an inexperienced, underfunded army, in the northwest.

Just 3 hours after invading, Azobyr has taken 3 settlements: Aqoliut, Gaqalat, and Hunoqolit. These are just villages, however.

The main target is now the city of Taqolou, with 50,000 inhabitants. Analysts believe that if Azobyr captures Taqolou, Mivorga can be forced to the negotiating table, to stop the Azobyrian armies from rampaging further.

Why?

The northwestern parts of Mivorga are a majority Azobyrian, and Azobyrian nationalists see the territory as rightfully Azobyrian.

The Azobyrian Patriots, a nationalist movement, campaigned on the promise of getting the area back from Mivorga. Mivorgan intelligence, however, discredited this as campaign rhetoric. And if it ever happened, most thought it would be through diplomatic means.

However, no one imagined it would escalate to war.

And escalate it did. Mivorgan defenses are confused and shocked on what Azobyr has done. Azobyr, taking advantage of this confusion, broke through border defenses, and aggressively began it's offensive.

Nations such as England and Latinia have condemned the sudden state of war, but have taken no further action. Other nations, particularly Mivorga's neighbors Luaar to the east and Vinzania to the south, have supported Azobyr's invasion. Angwein, a regional power and big nation to the south of Mivorga, has declared neutrality.

Why the hate?

Mivorga is disliked by it's neighbors, especially by Azobyr. They all think that Mivorga is an illegitimate nation because it is ruled by an English-descended prince, and it has many English traditions, unlike it's neighbors, which are historically associated with each other ethnically, linguistically and even culturally, unlike Mivorga, which originated as an English colony with other foreign pilgrims, who treated the natives harshly, who are also related to Mivorga's neighbors. Even though their society was born there and even a language (Mivorgan) flourished, there is no denial that both the world and it's neighbors see Mivorga as a foreign nation culturally, stuck between neighbors it can never relate to and constantly hate it's presence.

In short, they want Mivorga gone.

Who has the chances of winning?

Well, it's hard to say. Although Azobyr is larger in territory than Mivorga, it has less population, around only 7,125,000 people in fact, compared to Mivorga, which has 21.5 million. This is mostly since Azobyr has a cold climate, especially the tundraic north, and the fact that it has been historically marginalized by England when it was a colony, leading to it's demographic growth being historically affected. However, Azobyr has an advantage: a highly-trained army.

The Azobyrian Military is composed of 70,000 soldiers, however, it beats Mivorga in both technology and training. It is highly funded by Azobyr, as, historically, Azobyr has been in desperate need of an effective defense, leading to the military being valued by the government.

In contrast, the Mivorgan Royal Forces, composed of 130,000 men and women, are inexperienced and underfunded. This is also cultural like Azobyr, as Mivorga has relied on England for it's defense. However, England has not come to Mivorga's aid (for now), mostly because of England's new pacifist government, leading to Mivorga to be defenseless in a rough region full of enemies. This might also be because of oil reserves in Azobyr, which England is interested in. The only thing in which the MRF is superior is in manpower, having almost double the total amount of units Azobyr has.

However, with an intially confused army, Mivorga already is losing.

We will be posting short updates on the war here.

  The Imperium City Meeting
Posted by: - 10-19-2016, 03:43 PM - Replies (15)

Eager to establish diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, the Drewish Empire has called for a meeting at its capital, Imperium City. All nations of every political view have been invited to attend.

Christopher Stachowiak, the Grand Imperator of the Drewish Empire, sat comfortably in his office. He had high hopes for this meeting. The Drewish Empire was still a young nation, struggling to find a place in the world. Stachowiak was a smart man, and he realized every major nation needed allies, as his nation did now. Hopefully, various diplomats would come to speak with him. He planned as to how he would introduce himself to these diplomats while he patiently waited for their arrival.

  Old Friends Again [Attn Sekia]

Süteshar, Sekia

Satine looked out the window of the Esper-87’s window as they began their descent into the international airport of the Republic of Sekia’s capital city. It was a rather lovely place from the air and she was quite interested to visit once again as she had many times in the past. The relationship that ran between the Republic and the United Realms was deep and storied, dating back quite some time when an old Empire spanned this region of Artemia. President Xarim of Sekia and Empress Satine of Noveaux shared a personal relationship as friends, colleagues and equals. They always seemed to show the utmost respect for one another whenever the other visited their country or their subordinates did. This kind of mutual respect ran deep throughout their governments but it also seemed to be reflected in society itself. Many similarities could be seen throughout their nations, including similar beliefs in the fact they both had polytheism deeply rooted. Accompanying Satine on this visit were the Ministers of Defense and Cultural Affairs. Though the latter’s intentions in Sekia was actually to attend a separate meeting with the Sekian CA to discuss some exchanges and perhaps sending some Novean artifacts to some Sekian museums for a time and vice versa. The Empress and Minister of Defense however were going to discuss the conclusion of the Nahr War, Noveaux’s involvement there and why there had been such a break in tradition that had actually drawn Noveaux out of its self-imposed Armed Neutrality.

The plane began its final approach and touched down on the tarmac with the all familiar kiss and thud. Several Imperial Guardsmen exited the plane first, making their way down the stairs and at the bottom arrayed themselves on either side, there for the protection of the Empress and her Ministers. The visit was one she had looked forward to, even if the topic of discussion wasn’t the cheeriest or positive of choices. She doubted that the topic of her successor would be tabled either, it had been swirling up in the media back in Noveaux for some time as speculation over who would be elected the next Sovereign raged. Satine in her white skirt suit and old hairstyle, small white handbag, moderate white heels and her Ministers behind her departed the plane and walked to where the Sekian Servicemen awaited by the cars that would make up the motorcade.

The nation was safe, though at the advisement of her eldest son Maxus and the High Chancellor herself, the Empress had two guards with her at all times anywhere she went in or outside of Noveaux. “Dreadful how the world changes and things like this are required,” she said motioning to the guardsmen. “When I was but a girl my father used to walk among the people and this was never necessary.” She added reminiscing about the simpler times that seemed so long ago now. The two Ministers smiled at the comments but otherwise went back to reading their dossiers and agendas for the duration of the trip to Sekia. For the Minister of Cultural Affairs this was his fourth trip to the country, though for the Minister of Defense this was her first and she couldn’t help but steal glances out the car’s windows every now and then to see the beautiful architecture and landscape of the capital city of one of Noveaux’s closest allies. The drive though was pleasant enough and uneventful as one could hope.

The arrival at the Presidential Palace and subsequent procession into the building to meet with the Sekian representatives was pleasant. The Empress took the time to recall other times she had come here and those she had met. Such a storied building in a lovely place, one that truly sung the praises of those that came before. Upon meeting the Sekia President the Empress smiled and greeted him warmly, “An absolute delight to see you again Zhulis.” She said. “Ah I don’t know if you recall but this is my Minister of Cultural Affairs Cassius Donatus.” Minister Donatus bowed respectfully before shaking the hands of those present. Satine then turned her attention to her other Minister, “And this is my Minister of Defense, Olivia Tranto.” She said and like her colleague, Minister Tranto bowed and shook the hands of those present. The Novean delegation awaited the Sekians introductions before getting things underway.

  [IC] An Official Visit

Royal Air Force Foreign Eagle
4:30PM

"Madam Councillor, we are making our approach to land on Extrithica."

Grazia Marelli woke up, initially disoriented, but quickly remembered what was happening, and nodded in thanks to the aid who was standing next to her. "Thanks Enrico. I'll be getting ready." She stood, walked to a nearby seat and fastened her seatbelt, looking out the window into a bleak sky, hoping the visit would be better than what the sky seemed to foretell. It was a last minute trip, having come up a few days ago. She had just finished a meeting with her Council of Advisors when she received a notice that she was expected to represent Sartoria at an official visit to some country northeast of Selene...Nonfreesonia was it? It seems they were making their way out of isolation, and were approaching several nations to establish ties. That was awesome, but why did she have to be the one to make the trip? Not that it mattered at this point. She had a job to do, and would do it to the best of her ability.

She felt the touchdown on the runway of the National Airport, managing to overlook a huge formation of buildings further way, probably the skyline of Extrithica. It was truly massive, moreso than what the brief she read had implied. She saw a delegation over to the side, waiting for the plane to make a complete stop and for her to walk down the stairs. She readied her papers, until the captain turned off the seatbelt sign and she stood up again, talking with some advisors until the front door was opened. She looked out through the open door, took a deep breath and started walking down the stairs.

  Golden Leaf Ball
Posted by: - 10-17-2016, 07:25 PM - Replies (16)

Châteaux des Fleurs, Noveaux
24th of Octide

The leaves had turned to brilliant shades of gold, the reds and oranges as well. This was the Empress’ favorite time of the year at the Chateau des Fleurs which sat some ways outside of Auvon. Preparations had been going on for nearly a month throughout the nation for the culmination of the Harvest Festival on this night. At the Chateau itself they would be hosting the Harvest Ball in honor of the Festival. Already invitations had been dispatched nearly a month prior though some had to be rescinded due to the outbreak of war between Alssahra and Sach’aqa who Noveaux now found itself at odds with as well, on behalf of the former. The situation hung in the background of the festival and indeed it seemed to dampen the national spirit it a bit though the people were taking it in stride. Protests had been mounted every day since the Declarations’ passing on the 13th outside the Imperistarium building in Auvon along with in most of the Realm Capitals throughout the country. While small they were quite vocal and many politicians continued to express deep reservations about the intervention, but the Empress knew that the moment everything paid off in Alssahra that they would be the first take the credit. That’s what being a good politician was after all.

Indeed, this was to be the Empress’ last Harvest Ball as Sovereign of Noveaux, her announcement to abdicate the throne came on the fifteenth of the month. While siting her differences about the war and her inability to effectively lead the nation at the time was sufficient to sway most of the public’s opinion into accepting her abdication the true reason was health related and only four people besides herself knew of that. The woman was in a flurry of excitement as the leaders of the various realms began to arrive. A brief Council of State was going to be held in the afternoon to discuss the various situations facing the country at present, this was to be followed by the arrival of the guests for the Harvest Ball. Several foreign nations had already responded positively to the invitations, every ambassador in Noveaux was also invited to the event, while it was not the largest such thing held during the year it was the Empress’ favorite by far, simply because it was to be a Masquerade.

Satine made her way through the Estate’s various rooms finally coming to where the council was going to be held, making sure the placards were well placed and that everything was perfect as they began to arrive. She welcomed each as they took their assigned seat, all were ready for the ball considering their attire was ornate and fitting of their stations in life. When the Grand-Divine arrived in her clerical clothing everyone stood and bowed respectfully as she was the leader of their Faith. In addition to leading the Divine Faith, Hesperine also was the ruler of the Realm of Val Calais, who’s capital of Calien also served as the seat for the Faith. Every new Grand-Divine ruled from Calien and subsequently ruled the realm of Val Calais, it had been the way things were done for a thousand years and by the mercy of the gods would continue for another thousand. Finally, once they had all arrived the Conference was underway and continued without relatively any issue for the duration. At the end the Empress departed the room to go out on to the terraced garden where the Golden Leaf Ball was being held. Along with the Foreign Minister, her eldest son, and the Chancellor of the Imperistarium she awaited the arrival of the other guests.

As the Empress waited to greet the arrivals, the various Realm Lords departed to the Terraced Garden and began mingling with other high profile and well known figures from throughout Noveaux. Legendary Novean actress Dianna Calvier was mingling with the young Queen of Mitan, Hyperia. Madam Calvier as she was known acted for nearly thirty years during what has been called the Golden Age of Cinema in Noveaux from the forties to the seventies. She was still the life of any party even in her advanced age, the stories she could tell about indiscretions between her and others, secrets of the trade or otherwise interesting things that had happened during her time in Baradeaux were things that people today loved to listen too. A small group had formed around the elder actress listening to such stories about how she once seduced an unnamed prince and how they spent some time on the Holiday Islands off Noveaux’s coast. Such gossip always interested a crowd. Meanwhile the young Queen of Mitan, Hyperia listened intently and picked up subtle hints here and there in the woman’s speech that if put together told another story of heartbreak and how the whole thing wasn’t as flippant as Madam Calvier was giving it off to be, perhaps this Prince actually had the woman’s heart at one time and the way society was kept them from ever fulfilling their dreams to be together.

Elsewhere the Republican Lords as they had become known for their Realm’s all being Republics mingled among themselves and with some of the older Imperistarium members. Three of Noveaux’s eighteen realms were outright Republics with a couple being bastard hybrids. The three standing here though were Lucius Venatori, the Hegemon of Balenos near the Akarus border, next to him in the middle of the group was the Doge of Eltore, Nemius Thyri, which was close to the border with Boredomo, finally to the right was the Grand Prince of Ferelda, Caden Allistrom. The Republican Lords generally hung around with other Republican minded politicians from other realms or from the Imperistarium. They also had a decent reputation of being close to the Corporate entities such as the new CEO of du Veer International, Sebastien. He was in a nice tuxedo with a black bowtie standing with the group of Republican Lords though as the music began to be played, he escorted his sister Alice out onto the dance floor kicking off the evening’s festivities by encouraging others to begin dancing as well.

On two sides of the large terrace there were long tables with white sheets over them that held food and drinks. Various delicacies from around Noveaux and some dishes from foreign states that were there to help others adjust such as the Ambassadors or foreign leaders. Vintage wines, champagnes and other drinks were on ice throughout the arrangement and nice glasses were being carried around by waiters. At one of the tables another gaggle of people were chatting among themselves, this gaggle happened to include the Queen Darmatus, Morrigan Aldcourt along with the Queens of Epheria and Olevia along with the Kings of Calpheon and Sovia. This group were rather tight knit and had some of the lesser nobility with them as well. The group would be nearly impenetrable to an outsider though as they chose to remain where they were even as the music began to be played by the orchestra.

Mingling with a couple foreign Ambassadors though was the Crown Prince Maxus Remanti, eldest of the Empress’ children and heir to the Kingdom of Auvantoria. His sister Alessandra and her husband Galio Grangewald of St.Resia were also present with two of their own children. In fact, many members of the Imperial Family were present even though they rarely gathered like this, the Prince Edward and the young Princes Alphonse and Andrew however were in Alssahra fighting in the war there. The internal politicking of the Imperial Family was renown throughout the nation and likely the nearby areas for being rather brutal, but it was a way of life that could potentially forge the next ruler of Noveaux. Any guests were going to be welcomed by the Empress, Foreign Minister and several others before actually joining the rest on the terraced garden. The view was spectacular with mountains to the north and beautiful forest covered hills all around the estate proper. The only thing left to do for the Noveans is to await the arrival of their guests.

Hey guys import OOC Info now:

You are allowed to send 6 guests but each has a +1 so a total of 12 people from your nation are allowed.

Bodyguards in the Ball are limited to 1 but only and I do mean ONLY if it is a Head of State or Government. Otherwise all guards wait outside the main estate proper.

Posts in this thread MUST MUST MUST be a minimum of two paragraphs please. This is to push RPers and to ensure that things are happening.

Please DO NOT post invitation acceptances here. This is where you post your arrival to the estate. All foreigners will fly into Aurelia International Airport a few kilometers outside my capital and then be escorted in motorcades to the Estate from there. Also body guards are only allowed to carry an approved pistol if they enter the Ball. Bodyguards remaining outside the estate however may carry one pistol only as well since all security for the event is being provided for by the Novean Military Police and Imperial Guard.

Any other questions please TG me or find me in the Regional Chat Room

I hope you don't mind us dropping in! We're not exactly new to Nationstates, with an "on and off" sorta' history, but we enjoy being in a community and are happy to help when able! We might not be able to RP quite as extensively as some others in the region, but rest assured, where a voice is needed, we can be pretty loud!

  Nuclear Weapons in the World
Posted by: - 10-15-2016, 06:42 PM - Replies (10)

I'm personally of the mindset that Nuclear Weapons and their likeminded Hydrogen Counterparts shouldn't be in this world. We don't have a rival strong enough to get the nation of Selene to produce them let alone stockpile them. In addition to that most of the rest of the world doesn't seem to have significant IC reason to produce or stockpile WMD's in Selene.

Not only would nations have drowned gobs of money (a strain on any economy) into it but also would have had to conducted tests either underground or in the atmosphere. Either of which would have sent off alarm bells in other nations.

I bring this to the culmination of why nations should not have WMDs in this world. If one does more will. Proliferation in RP worlds is a serious issue that most region's don't offer sufficient oversight on. For example if Sartoria has it why would Akarus or Seloana or other nations nearby not? They would have a serious potential threat at their doorstep giving them sufficient IC reason to have done or to begin the process of obtaining a nuclear weapon.

On top of the domino effect I'd also worry about the international ramifications of it, such as the radiation in the atmosphere from tests, ground pollution from the tests, also about how quickly war would become near impossible essentially rendering any way a possible nuclear war that would have far reaching effects on all nations and not localized.

Pardon if this was a rant, I'm pretty anti-WMD in RP regions.

This is oriented towards Regional Canon. If it was allowed to run parallel and not canon then I don't really have a preference.

  The man and the empress

Griffin had never met him first.
In fact you'd never met the Living member of any royal family. In all of his 24 years of life the newly-appointed CEO of the nation and chairman of the National Council I rarely ever left his home country. He was the only child of his father who had turned they're small little monarchy into a burgeoning Empire with the greatest economy in the region. But that same isolationism that had brought his father such success risk undoing all the good that had been done. Without foreign markets to trade in their economy would grind to a halt. It was from this position of desperation that this man had gone against everything is father had stood for to end the policy of isolationism period.
Now he was on his way to his first official meeting with a foreign dignitary in his life. He was so ill prepared for this. His father had died suddenly in an "accident" and the board quickly had installed him as the new head of state.
But there was little time to focus on that. He had to be the leader for his people and the defender of his father's Legacy. With this final thought he looked out the window of his luxury helicopter that was transporting him to his meeting with this foreign dignitary.
He knew very little about the empress and their isolationism prevented them from having much information on her butt he was certain to make a good impression
