Congress to discuss on the AU-mandated increase on military spending

Republicans want to improve on the military's quality; the Democrats wish to give existing personnel a generous raise.

Meridia - As Meridia is expected to join the AU, there is a debate in Congress on what to do with the additional military spending the country is expected to incur.

The Republicans have pushed for an upgrade to the military's existing equipment, training and tactics with this money in order to meet AU standards. But the Democratic opposition refuse this idea, insteading proposing new benefits and a juicy pay hike for troops.

The measure has proven to be controversial, even within the coalition government. Whilst the Nationalists are firmly behind the Republicans' calls for a boost on military spending, and even pushing to exceed the AU's standards, the Libertarians are staunchly opposed, something the opposition can use to incite a Libertarian rebellion and, in a best-case scenario for them, break up the ruling government entirely. The latter is unlikely, however.

Meridian society is polarized on the issue. The Republicans themselves justify themselves not on a love for armed prowess, but that this is a small price to pay to join the prestigious organization. Indeed, some Republicans have a chance, however slight, of rebelling and voting with their archrivals. The Democrats have accused the government of wishing to turn Meridia into an "armed regional power" and truly desiring to elevate the military's standing and capibilities, something unpopular with the pacifist Meridian society.

Why is funding the military more out of a genuine belief of a strong army so unpopular?

You must understand the Meridian populace to comprehend why this thought is so rare.

As the country found itself in peace after the 19th century, the military's standing in society began to wane. The population began to adopt a pacifist, even isolationist stance, wishing to preserve Meridia and its democracy. This is why the armed forces have been designed in the modern era to fight purely defensive campaigns, lacking any capibilities to go on the offensive.

Furthermore, the role the military had on L'Emergénsia d'Sacurí and Maurelíano's dictatorship in the 20th century accelerated the decline of the military's prestige, and dealt a near-fatal blow to its reputation. There are people who lived those regimes, and those who suffered them often tell of the brutality the army dealt them, crucially in Maurelíano's Modérna Dictaturé, where ethnic and political minorities were routinely oppressed and, especially in the case of the Faranze and the communists, utterly dehumanized in military campaigns against rebels.

Thus, the military's honour is so low, having an honest intention to increase its budget will definitely guarantee you a loss in the national elections, with only some in society actually supporting it, such as the minor Nationalists in the ruling coalition. This is why the Republicans are saying that, although they "don't agree with the concept", this is but a small fee to join the AU.

So, most Meridians don't want an increase to the army's budget?

One word: Yup

That's why political opinion is so split? Some seeing an upgrade as something that has to be done, and others wanting to keep the army as is, but almost no one really wants this?

Pretty much.

The Republicans think of this as a sacrifice, and the Democrats just want to technically meet the quota by dumping the excess money into soldiers' wallets?

Aye

(OOC:...You're not going to stop this, will you...)

(What can I say, it's a fun game)

(Alright, I'll stop)

How's the political landscape looking?

Whilst the government may be facing a major Libertarian revolt, not all things are unicorns and rainbows in enemy-land.

Some Democrats and other opposition parties concur with the Republican majority, seeing the AU's policies as a package deal, not something Meridia can just cherrypick.

Particularly in the Senate there is also additional opposition, with the anti-military Faranze Independence Party and Union for Ossitania holding the one seat allocated to both the Faranze and Ossitania regions each, respectively. These only have a small presence in the Delegates of the Nation compared to their augumented power in the Senate. Their two Senators will most certainly vote against any improvements to existing military capibilities.

Luckily for the Republicans, their possibly rebellious partner, the Libertarians, have a diminished presence in the Senate, as delegates there are sent from each region, not elected nationwide like the Delegates of the Nation are. This method tends to benefit larger parties there. If they sway a few opposition Senators, they have this chamber in the bag.

The below is the outcome of the Roccuro-Parthenopias state visit from 20-27th. The visit was originally the Archon and the Emperor visiting Roccuro but due to recent events in Parthenopias only the Emperor was able to complete the visit. Alexander was empowered by Archon Jessero to carry out the visit fully and to sign the Declaration.

  2018 Akarusian General Elections
Posted by: - 07-01-2018, 12:16 AM - Replies (3)

With the passage of reforms to the Akarusian constitution, campaigns have now begun for elections to fill Akarus' broken government.

With the passage of the reforms, the Akarusian monarchy has been abolished. In its place, a largely ceremonial role of President has been created as head of state. Most executive powers have been transferred to the position of Prime Minister. Rokus Altink has returned to the role of Prime Minister after being deposed by Adelaide. After his brutal imprisonment Altink has announced he will not seek re-election, and intends to retire from politics. The election is set to mark a massive shift in Akarusian politics, with many parties surging or collapsing in the polls while new parties begin to emerge.

The Democratic Union holds a precarious position. Its failure during the rise of Adelaide has left a dark cloud over its reputation, with groups on both sides of the political spectrum questioning its ability to defend Akarus. Adelaide's crackdowns have also lead to the resignation of many members of the old Cabinet in addition to Prime Minister Altink, leaving the parties leadership in a questionable state.

Support for the Conservative Party has collapsed in the polls. Its support of Adelaide's regime as the dominant party of the Rump Parliament has lead them to be viewed as collaborators by many. A number of its former leaders now stand on trial for their actions. The remainder of the party struggles to rebrand itself, purging all traces of Adeladist support and pushing a traditional social conservative agenda.

The Progress Party has been the largest beneficiary of the collapse of the Conservative Party. The party was only lightly impacted by Adelaide's rule, while largely avoiding appearances of collaboration. It's capitalist economic agenda has attracted many from the Conservatives, while its more progressive social policy has also helped it draw some support from the Democrats.

The Socialist Party has seen a massive surge. Though highly suppressed by Adelaide, socialist figures were a major presence in the opposition to Adelaide and the subsequent military junta. Its supporters held influence over much of the underground movement, while Socialist leaders were at the head of the General Strike which crippled the Junta economically.

Once a fringe group, the National Revival Party has grown significantly in the post-Adelaide era. It has made significant gains from the Conservative party, absorbing support from the growing far-right. Many of its members openly express pro-Adelaide and/or anti-democratic views, leaving many concerned about its rise. There are whispers its electoral status may be at risk, with suggestions that the party be banned for its Adeladist agenda. The party is also accused of having ties to the military junta in Nolvik.

Of the new post-Adelaide political parties, the Liberal Democrats represent the largest. Formed as a splinter group from the Democratic Union, the Liberal Democrats take a similar but more progressive agenda. The similarities in Agenda and lack of negative associations have allowed the new party to make significant gains from their parent party.

The Green Party has remained somewhat steady between elections. The party has made some games from the collapse of the Democrats, but is not expected to make significant gains in the elections.

Current polls show a major lead by the Socialist party, which is expected to form a coalition with the other progressive parties.

  Septima and the AU
Posted by: - 06-30-2018, 10:01 AM - No Replies

Through productive conversation between the members of the AU in an OOC context, it was decided on a final note that the Seven Republics are not a current member of the Artemian Union, nor have they been for a number of years.

Initially formed after the Peninsular War between Kalos and Selene, and their respective allies and partners in the conflict, the Artemian Union contained the Empire of Selene, the Principality of Sartoria, the Seven Republics, and the Serene Thalassocracy of Parthenopias, and is a primarily military and economic alliance. The decades after the war was marked by a desire on the part of Kalos to avoid another war, as successive Grand Commanders have been more diplomatic than the one during the conflict.

During these years, however, difficulties in the alliance manifested into major problems. The rivalry of the Serene Thalassocracy and the Republics before the war would not easily be broken down, nor would either side take the major steps necessary to begin the long process. This resulted in a gridlock of sorts over major policy issues affecting either side’s influence or power, with barely any compromise.

The election of 1980 saw a hard-right government come to power in the Republics, forming the basis of populism in Septima for decades to come. The major campaign promise that awarded them power in the election was the withdrawal of the nation from the Artemian Union due to “Major Grievances”. The process was started very quickly the following year, and after a two year process of disentangling, in 1983 the Seven Republics stood on their own in the world, and the AU was reduced to three nations.

Should there be any questions I’m sure Parthenopias, Justinian, or I would be happy to answer them, but I feel as though this is a good summary.

History of Nuclear War and the End of Cake
Posted by: - 06-29-2018, 11:21 PM - No Replies

In the year 1973, the Seven Republics and the Thalassocracy of Parthenopias began a war that was to last a mere two and a half hours. It was the most destructive war that this planet had ever endured. The reason for this war? Well, for the past 30 years the two counties had been in a state of cold war and hated each other with the burning passion of a billion nuclear missiles. But who shot first? Parthenopias, the stuck up islanders. It happened like this: the Archon, elected ruler of their back water country, was enjoying some fine and delicious cake. The cake was the called the Pink Pollen Cake and was made with real pollen. As such, when the most illustrious of citizens, Archon Pandora, went to take her first bite she sneezed. When she did this she accidentally slammed her fist on her desk. But it was not her desk that she she ended up hitting! OH NOOOOOO. It was a big, bright, blue, button!!! And like that, the missiles went flying!

"Oh no! Whatever have I done!", shouted the Archon. "I should probably inform someone and tell them this is a mistake! But... this cake is veryyyyy goood, and I do so veryyy much want to finish it. I'm sure my cabinet will be able to sort things out in the morning." And like that, the Archon, wisest of the humans, died while eating cake.

But wait! There is more to this story! It was not the nukes, which Septima launched in retaliation, that killed this thicc lady, it was the Archon herself! With the fork in the Rhombus Office! (What a strange shape) She chocked while eating! As such, she was not there to witness the end of her most wondrous country and the world.

  Kapelgian Archipelago Treaty
Posted by: - 06-13-2018, 04:47 PM - No Replies

The interim leaders of Akarus and Kapel met in the Selenid capital of Byzantium to participate in trilateral talks. After weeks of negotiations, the nations ratified a treaty. The Treaty of Byzantium, formally known as the Treaty on the Recognition of Sovereignty  in the Kapelgian Archipelago, brings an end to the hostilities that have plagued the arctic for many months.

Among its articles, the Treaty includes the following major point:

  • Akarus and Vallen recognize the Kapelgian Republic as a sovereign, independent state.
  • Kapel and Vallen recognize the Armistice Line established by 1922 Tvete Armistice as their formal border.
  • Akarus and Kapel recognize the Kapelgian administrative borders as they existed prior to the accession of Adelaide Blixen as their formal border.
  • All signatories permanently renounce all territorial claims on other signatory nations.
  • Vallen will pay reparations to Akarus for the Taanum Island Incident of December 14th, 2017.
  • Vallen agrees to additional protections of the culture and language of Kapelgians residing within Vallener territory in the Kapelgian Archipelago
  • An international tribunal will be established by the signatories of this tresty for the prosecution of war crimes committed by Akarusian military personnel.
The treaty brings a semblance of peace after months of war and unrest, though the newly formed governments of the region face much instability. All signatories also expressed concern towards Nolvik, which had become increasingly belligerent since the assassination of Adelaide. There are fears that Nolvik's military junta may move against Akarus following the revolution that lead to the abolition of Akarus' monarchy.
