  Nolvik's Intervention in Akarus
Posted by: - 08-29-2018, 11:19 PM - Replies (5)

Peacekeepers

In response to the rapidly escalating political violence in Akarus, Nolvik had mobilized an armed "peacekeeper" force. With the ban of the radical right-wing NRP in Akarus, open violence has broken out in the streets.

In the early hours of August 29th, Nolvish forces crossed the border into Akarusian territory. With the support of NRP agents, Nolvik was able to quickly move into southern Akarus. By the end of the day Nolvik had occupied most of the southern province of Varselder, as well as the cities of Hallum and Boeven. In the east the cities of Alttrier and Vianden are under threat, and with them the road to the capital of Andropen. Divided and caught off-guard Akarusian military forces were routed,  retreating north with minimal resistance.

Nolvik continues to claim the forces are there solely as peacekeepers, and no declaration of war has been issued. NRP militias are reportedly cooperating with Nolvil in the occupation. Some fear Nolvik intends to entirely overthrow the fragile Akarusian Republic, and install an authoritarian monarchy like that of Nolvik with Nolvish King Erik III as monarch.

Akarusian forces are reportedly rallying for a counterattack. With part of the armed forces already tied up by militias across the country, Akarusian already reduced ability to resist is uncertain. While Akarus has not yet released a formal response, in a speech today Prime Minister Altink called for unity in Akarus against the invasion.

  Sunrise Herald

The Sunrise Herald was established in 1854 and has been circulated nationally throughout Parthenopias since 1866. Widely seen as the leading newspaper, the Sunrise Herald has a reputation as being upstanding and has won awards for integrity. Originally the paper was owned by the Sereterci Family though they have since sold the paper to the Atlas Corporation. Atlas Corp. has large holdings in media throughout the nation and is currently the high valued company in Parthenopias with diverse holdings in many sectors.

While some have claimed this has led to a decrease in the integrity of the paper, the editor is still a member of the Sereterci family and the paper is consistently ranked as independent of its owners. Indeed it was in 2014 that the Sunrise Herald was the first to report on the widespread corruption and money laundering taking place at Atlas which led to the change in leadership. Since Arlo Toussaint took the helm of Atlas it has been recovering from the scandals and continued to support the paper's independence.

The paper takes a politically neutral stance and as such does not endorse candidates at any level of government, choosing rather to remain as an objective observer willing to serve the people rather than political interests.

Parthenion, Parthenopias
8.8.2018

Ioulian was fixing his tie and looking over the other members of his house. His grandfather, parents and siblings were all present and dressed the part of the Imperial House. It was his cousin though that really commanded the air of authority and respect though, after all Alexandros was Emperor, Kyriarchos ton Parthenion. The young leader of the nation, while he had been merely the Head of State from December on till last month he now stood as the Head of Government. The weight of the responsibilities now on his shoulders showed from the way he carried himself to the discoloration under his eyes. A weight that none in the family would willingly wish upon any other, Alexandros however seemed to manage it well enough.

They all stood on the steps to the Palatul pe Stanci, the official residence of the Kyriarchos in Parthenion. It was quite a bit warmer in the Capital than it was in the highlands where House Atrus hailed from. The mountain air was sorely missed by those present. Banners fluttered in the gentle breeze as birds chirped about. The city was awash with the official colors of the Imperial House of Parthenopias and the Royal House of Aldenfojur as their Crown Princess was visiting. Well she was visiting Ioulian again as he had done a handful of times by this point. They were courting in a sense.

Yes some might say that it was a rather archaic method to going about things. Arranged marriage was not something he would call it though as the powers that be were making sure the pair were comfortable with one another and the matters at hand. Ioulian however was rather thrilled by the prospects of a new culture and country to call home. He had always been interested in the foreign things and as such had chosen to major in International Affairs when he attended University. His interest had never waned and when Alexandros became Kyriarchos his interest grew. Thankfully his cousin had even allowed him to sit in on a few Foreign Policy meetings.

This courtship was something of an unexpected but quite welcome surprise. Today was yet one more step in the ongoing journey. The princess would be coming for a visit, tonight would be a dinner and then over the next few days they would be spirited away to the highlands and thus to the Atrus Estate. There they would enjoy a rather simplistic few days of calm and quiet. Then a large ball would be held and then that is when Alexandros was set to make some kind of announcement. Ioulian admittedly wasn’t sure what the announcement would be about but he had his suspicious it would be about the Kyriarchos’ boyfriend. They had, after all been in an on again off again relationship for the better part of six years. Who knows, perhaps it was them finally tying the knot.

Trumpets blaring signaled that the motorcade carrying the Princess and her entourage had finally arrived at the Palace and it would be only a moment before they pulled up and doors were opened, greetings exchanged and everyone was ushered into the palace’s reception rooms for some cordial relaxation and conversation.

Roleplay Interest Survey Results
Empire of Selene

A few months ago we asked our members to answer the Roleplay Interest Survey, a questionnaire that asked about their interests in terms of tech levels and types of roleplays. The idea was to know more about what kind of roleplaying you want to see in the region, so that what we do are roleplays that you can enjoy. It has taken a few months for us to take another look at this, but we finally have the results of the Survey, and wish to present them for a discussion among our community.

It goes without saying that, if you weren't here when the Survey was first conducted, you are more than welcome to answer it now by going here. Your answers will be quickly incorporated.

Tech Levels

Results show that most respondents are comfortable with Modern Tech roleplays, but a majority also would like to see Past Tech roleplays, and nearly half have an interest in Future Tech. Since MT is our canon, there would be no issues with that field. Things are more interesting and complex when it comes to promoting roleplays of different tech levels; it would be possible to promote canon roleplays in Past Tech, or promote FT roleplays in The Dardanelles. It would depend (1) on interest levels and (2) how dedicated the community would be to following through with those roleplays.

Of course, given our current relative inactivity, there is an argument to be made about focusing on keeping stable activity in MT before branching out to other tech levels, but that would depend on what kind of interest there is. Perhaps branching out would lead to more activity, rather than divert from it.

Roleplay Types

A majority of respondents are, at worst, indifferent to all types of roleplay suggested in the Survey. There are four types of roleplay, all related to internal national events or peaceful cooperation, that respondents answered they either Like or Strongly Like. Nation Building has the highest likeability average, at 4.6, so there lies the most potential for member engagement.

There are two points to consider about this. On the one hand, nation building is important in order to have a consistent and well-developed world, and also so each member can figure out what place it has in the world. We simply can't roleplay with others if we don't know what kind of country each of us have. Are we friends? Are we enemies? Do we have valuable resources? Are we monarchies or dictatorships? There are many questions that need to be answered.

On the other hand, focusing too much just on nation building risks prolonging our current inactivity, where we focus on off-forum nation building and Flash News posts, without actually creating stories or interacting with each other. These results also show us that there is potential for cooperation. Plenty of respondents have a liking for space exploration roleplays, civil wars and government visits. In addition, while other types of roleplay are in the minority, there are still players who like them, and we need to listen to them.

There are some ways in which we can motivate people to get involved. For one, we can integrate nation building into story creation. For example, if we have a nation building theme of the week or month, we can try all try to commit to incorporate that theme into actual, non-Flash News, roleplays during that month. If we have developed lists of our main industries, we can commit to roleplay about trade deals, industrial crises or product exchanges. If we develop the history of our Antarctic treaties, we could do a Past Tech roleplay that shows the early exploration of the Antarctic continent. Another idea we could incorporate is to allow each member to decide a roleplay type or theme of the month, provided that it has broad agreement from the community, and to each promise to roleplay that. I understand that some of us have preferences, but unless we absolutely hate a kind of roleplay, I believe we can make small concessions in order to make the region a more active and fun place.

For now, I would like to hear from all our members. You must have some opinion about the results of the Survey, or some thoughts about what kind of roleplays you would like to see. Right now it doesn't matter how unlikely you think it is that we will do your preferred roleplay. The idea is to know what ideas are out there, so we can figure out what has more acceptance, what could be workable, and what we should do moving forward.

Foreign Policy Marathon
Empire of Selene

I am proud to announce the first Foreign Policy Marathon, a week-long event whose goal is to promote activity and encourage our roleplayers to form closer ties with each other. This even is officially hosted by the Privy Council, and therefore all roleplayers are encouraged and expected to participate.

When will the Marathon take place?

It will take place between August 1-7, for a whole week.

What does it involve?

All roleplayers will be required to participate in at least one foreign policy event, with at least one other roleplayer. Each event will be worth a certain amount of points; by the end of the week, the roleplayer with the most points will receive an award.

How are points given?

Events will be worth a certain amount of points, based on the following rules:

Event
Points
A post in Flash News
0
A newspaper article about a foreign policy event involving at least two countries
5
A joint statement by the governments of at least two countries
10
A roleplay about a meeting by mid-level officials from at least two countries
15
Military exercises
15
A meeting of Cabinet-level officials, or senior military staff, from at least two countries
20
A visit by the head of state or government to a foreign country or to Antarctica
25

Are there any standards to how events may be roleplayed?

This Marathon is meant to encourage actual activity in the region; twisting the spirit of the rules will not be allowed, and will result in a final score of zero. Events will have to adhere to the following rules:
  • While roleplayers may continue to post in Flash News, posts there will not be worth any points.
  • A newspaper article will only be worth points if the other participating roleplayer(s) post an equivalent article referencing the same event.
  • Roleplays, including official meetings, visits or military exercises, will only be worth points if they have more than two participants.
  • Events will not be worth any points if they are not in the form of a newspaper article or an actual roleplay.
  • Events will not be worth any points if the only participating countries are owned by the same roleplayer.

In short, what is this Marathon about?

If you have a country on the map, you have to do as many foreign policy articles and roleplays as you can, with as many roleplayers as you can. Whoever has the most points by the end of the Marathon will get an award.

The Grand Parliament Building, 17:30

The largest gathering of some of the most powerful individuals in the Seven Republics occurred in a single gargantuan room, all centered around the speaker's podium that was in use during the First Insular Congress over two hundred years ago. Naturally, when hundreds of people are gathered in a rather tight space they tend to produce a large quantity of noise, so much so that Grand Chancellor Henn's attempt to quite the crowd with the Congressional gavel was a failure. Resorting to the speaker system with appropriate microphone embedded along the siding of the podium and hidden from the view of most in the most and in the media space provided, he announced, "The Second Insular Congress of the Seven Republics shall come to order. Would the secretary please mark the roster as full attendance?"

Sitting off to the side of the podium but close enough to have to shield his ears from the hard pounding of the gavel, he nodded and made the appropriate marks on the paper sitting in front of him. Some shuffling occurred and the typewriter was brought before his fingers, ready to type whatever words were to come out of a soul in the room.

"Thank you, Mr. Secretary. Delegates of this esteemed Congress, I am proud to announce the formation of the Northern Sea Alliance, between the Seven Republics, the Adler Republic, and the Drakhmani State. Our purpose for this alliance is to safeguard the interests of the Seven Republics, to ensure strong friendships may exist for longer than occurred before that horrible war in the 60s, and that a mutual purpose arising from such an organisation may better serve the citizens of the world that we may have a chance to meet. Present at this Congress today is President Georgios Adrianos, of the Drakhmani State, and Chancellor Hildegard Wolf of the Adler Republic. On behalf of President Adrianos and herself, Chancellor Wolf has agreed to speak before this Congress, and I urge all delegates in attendance to heed the words of our closest ally. Please welcome Chancellor Hildegard Wolf!"

Henn's last words were marked by a large clapping he gave off to the side of the mic, so that it would not burst the eardrums of the delegates, followed by the rest of the room. Cameras were fast to capture the transfer of the speakership, and he extended his arm out to her when she approached the podium.
