Nolvik's Intervention in Akarus

#1

Peacekeepers

In response to the rapidly escalating political violence in Akarus, Nolvik had mobilized an armed "peacekeeper" force. With the ban of the radical right-wing NRP in Akarus, open violence has broken out in the streets.

In the early hours of August 29th, Nolvish forces crossed the border into Akarusian territory. With the support of NRP agents, Nolvik was able to quickly move into southern Akarus. By the end of the day Nolvik had occupied most of the southern province of Varselder, as well as the cities of Hallum and Boeven. In the east the cities of Alttrier and Vianden are under threat, and with them the road to the capital of Andropen. Divided and caught off-guard Akarusian military forces were routed,  retreating north with minimal resistance.

Nolvik continues to claim the forces are there solely as peacekeepers, and no declaration of war has been issued. NRP militias are reportedly cooperating with Nolvil in the occupation. Some fear Nolvik intends to entirely overthrow the fragile Akarusian Republic, and install an authoritarian monarchy like that of Nolvik with Nolvish King Erik III as monarch.

Akarusian forces are reportedly rallying for a counterattack. With part of the armed forces already tied up by militias across the country, Akarusian already reduced ability to resist is uncertain. While Akarus has not yet released a formal response, in a speech today Prime Minister Altink called for unity in Akarus against the invasion.

Nolvik's forces continue their "peacekeeping" operation in Akarus, entering the city of Vianden on the afternoom of August 30th. The occupation of Vianden leaves the road open to Andropen, with some fearing the capital may be occupied within days. With much of the Akarusian forces in the region in retreat, the Nolvish advance has seen relatively few casualties so far. Akarus is reportedly attempting to set up a defensive line south of Andropen.

In a speech yesterday, Prime Minister Altink called on the Akarusian people to stand together against the invasion, urging all sides in ongoing partisan conflict to stand down and fight for their homeland. He also called on the nations of world for aid, calling on them to "defending the flame of democracy against the encroaching darkness".

In a separate event later that day, Socialist Party leader Espen Vang issued a rallying cry to his supporters, calling on them to "take up arms against foreign oppressors, and fight for [their] freedom". He would also denounce the NRP, calling them "puppets of foreign tyrants".

The NRP now claims control in the areas under Nolvish control, though NRP militias remain active throughout the country. The NRP has declared Akarus to be an "illegitimate government, subverting the will of the people".

Battle of the Svorta River

With the fall of southern Akarus, Akarusian forces retreated north towards the capital. Over the next week Akarus engaged in a tactical retreat as it mobilized its forces, setting up a defensive line along the Svorta River. The first Nolvish troops reached the Svorta river on September 4th, with the last Akarusian troops retreating across the river - except around Andropen - by September 9th.

Akarusian forces would fight valiantly to defend the capital. After nearly two weeks of fighting Akarusian forces would be pushed out of the capital on September 16th, with the rest of the Andropen salient falling by September 19th.

Despite the fall of the capital, the rest of the Akarusian line continued to hold. Nolvik's advance had slowed to a crawl as Akarus continued to mobilize and rally its forces.

Though Akarus would call on Kapel for aid, the former colony refused to intervene. Tensions have continued between the two nations since Kapel gained independence earlier this year.

With the capital and most of southern Akarus under its control, the NRP has declared the "restoration" of the former kingdom. This claim has been widely denounced both inside and outside of Akarus, viewing this claimed state as a puppet of Nolvik.

Battle of Hyvena

Following the Adleran declaration of war on September 3rd, Adleran forces advanced across the border into Nolvik. Heavy fighting broke out across the entire, but with their superior firepower Adler had forced Nolvik from the border by the 8th. Their advance began to slow as the Nolvish reserves arrived at the front, nearly grinding it to a halt by the 11th.

Both sides fought hard, but by September 20th the tides had turned once again. Mobilized Adleran forces had shifted the balance of power, an imbalance which continued to shift. For nearly two weeks Adler pushed hard into Nolvik, occupy most of Hyvena province and threatening most of southern Nolvik.

The Adleran offensive came to a halt on September 29th, following the death of much of its senior government. Limited fighting would continue in following days, until the a ceasefire was enacting on October 2nd.

Following the fall of Andropen, Akarusian and AU forces dug in along Svorta River. The move was a stalling tactic intended to delay the Nolvish advance until Atermia Union forces could arrive in large numbers on the frontlines. Overwhelming allied air and naval superiority had already quickly turned the campaign into a costly fight for Nolvik.

The first major counterattack came on October 4th, following the signing of the ceasefire with Adler. With the signing of the ceasefire Nolvik withdrew most of its reserve forces from the Adler front, deploying them towards Akarus. Attempting to press the advantage before the enemy reinforcements arrived, allied forces launched a major attack in the Second Battle of Andropen. The initial attack successfully reclaimed Andropen north of the Svorta river, but progress quickly began to slow despite heavy Nolvish losses

On October 12th, Union forces launched an attack across the Svorta into northern Vianden. The river had created a large salient in the region, which the allied attack attempted to exploit. The major combined arms offensive proved to be a major success, and within two days the resulting breakthrough threatened to fully encircle thousands of Nolvish troops. Allied forces used the opening to rapidly advanced south through the Vianden region. The success of the offensive resulted in Nolvish troops being fully repelled from Andropen on October 18th. By October 22nd, allied forces were nearing Vianden. That day an amphibious assault was launched on the city.

Adler issued an ultimatum to Nolvik on October 23rd, with 72 hours to respond. Nolvik did not respond to the ultimatum, and on October 26th Adler reopened hostilities.

Following the liberation of Vianden, allied forces continued their advance into southern Akarus.

As the tide turned against them, Nolvish forces converged on Alttrier in an attempt to break the allied advance. The beginning of the Battle of Alttrier saw heavy allied casualties. The battle dragged on, draining the Nolvish forces even as its reinforcements were rushed south towards Adler. Nolvik was soon forced to withdraw from the city by the growing losses.

The fall of the encircled pocket in northern Vianden further strained Nolvik's frontline, soon approaching total collapse. As allied forces reached the Nolvish border near Lindan, Akarus sought to push south into Nolvik. The forces of the Artemia Union refused the request, prevented from an offensive by their mandate. Despite the tensions, the allies continued to liberate occupied territory in Akarus.

With both their Adlerian and Akarusian fronts on the brink of total collapse, Nolvik sued for peace with Akarus and the Artemia Union on December []. Over the following days Nolvik would completely withdraw its forces from Akarus as part of the armistice, shifting its forces south in a desperate effort.
