There are two things you need to know here. First, there is a difference between history and historical fiction. History is the story behind real events, whereas historical fiction is fiction created around real events. Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin is a great example of historical fiction. It is based on real events, but the characters, storyline, and the way the story is told is the creation of the author. Second, there is a difference between non-fiction and non-historical fiction about African Americans. Non-fiction is a real story about real people. Non-historical fiction does not have to be about real people and events. For example, just because Disney's Mulan is based on a Chinese legend does not make it an historical novel about Chinese. It is just a non-historical novel. While historical fiction is based on real events and real people, it is not considered historical non-fiction. Daniel Hale Williams, an African-American, was the first doctor to successfully perform open heart surgery. In 1893, he successfully repaired a wound in the left ventricle of a gunshot victim. Williams was a pioneer for other African-American doctors who were interested in pursuing a career in surgery.
