A Resolution

To Express Concern Over the Military Intervention of Fydoria in Arzixilega

Whereas the House of Commons of the Empire of Selene has the sovereign prerogative to issue its opinion on matters of public interest;

Whereas foreign policy is a matter of public interest, necessitating the full attention of His Majesty's Government;

Whereas Fydoria has engaged in unacceptable military intervention in Arzixilega, violating the tenets of national sovereignty and international law;

The House of Commons resolves as follows:

  1. The intervention of Fydoria into the internal affairs of Arzixilega is a flagrant violation of international law and runs contrary to the values upheld by Selene and the Artemian Union.

  2. His Majesty's Government is asked to address the subject matter of this resolution with the utmost promptitude, in line with the policies and values long espoused by this House and the Government.

  3. The Prime Minister is advised to promote the discussion of this matter with the allies of Selene and the Artemian Union, so that international action may be taken, as appropriate, to guarantee the sovereignty of Arzixilega.

  4. The Prime Minister or, should he deem more adequate, the Foreign Minister, shall be invited to answer questions a week after the passage of this resolution, on the progress made in response to its provisions, and to account for any further development relating to its subject matter.
Presented by: The Great Honourable, Prime Minister Vangelis Dimitriou
Seconded by: The Honourable, Nikos Venizelos

"Madam Speaker, I, the honourable Vangelis Dimitriou, hereby present this resolution on Fydorian interventionism to the members of the House of Commons of the Ekklesia, with the honourable Nikos Venizelos as my second. It is my hope that the Ekklesia as a whole may pass this resolution quickly, for the spectre of dangerous ideals is everywhere and widely encompassing."
"I find this resolution to be in order, and admit it for debate on the floor. I will now be taking requests from members who wish to address the substance of this resolution, and should amendments be suggested, they will be entertained."

Anna Polydoras
Speaker

If you wish to debate the resolution, assume you have been given the floor by the Speaker. If you will propose an amendment, please be specific and propose an actual, written amendment, rather than just talk about it. If there is a motion to vote, and the Speaker agrees that debate has been sufficient, the vote will start.
"This proposal is totally one-sided and ignorant, Mr. Speaker. We must remain neutral, or condemn all" said Alexandros "If we condemn one side, we might give the impression that we favour the other, in this case, the Communists, Fascists, Anarchists, Separatists, etc. This war was caused by the communists. Why we do not condemn all sides for their brutality? The Republic for allowing Fydorian intervention, Fydoria for its blatant violations of human rights, the communists for inciting the war in the first place and savagely even bombing a crowded hospital in the capital, and the other insurgents for extending the bloodbath. If we are to take a stance, we must criticize all belligerents involved, or stay neutral"

"As such, I implore the Prime Minister to amend this condemnation, so it can be aimed against all guilty parties involved in the barbaric slaughter of the Arzixian Republic. For me, if we do not condemn all sides, we are one-sided, solely blaming one group alone in the wider conflict. We might even give the impression that we are supportive or at least neutral to the other criminals. We must not allow that to occur"

"And, to finish off, the Fydorian intervention is not a threat to the sovereignty of the Arzixian Republic. It was the Republic's own authorities whom let them in. So, I also plea to the Prime Minister to remove such clauses, as no one currently threatening the sovereignty of this archipelago. Instead, we must, again, also condemn the Republic for allowing inhuman attacks made by Fydorian aid. This is a civil war, not a Fydorian invasion"

(OOC: This is my amendment. Idk how to write well)
Alexia Lascari,
ME for Psyakros

Alexia listened to her Environmentalist colleague criticize the bill very publicly and quite harshly. Not really what you would expect or hope for from a coalition partner. His sentiments about the nature of the condemnation was relatively sound, though this is certainly the kind of conversation that should have been had behind closed doors so as to present a unified front from the government. Nonetheless it would be ignorant to think that the statements by Mr. Argryis were inherently wrong. The amendment itself was a lie. Arizixilega's government had indeed asked for intervention from Fydoria and as such Fydoria was not in violation of Sovereignty or International Law. For their intervention at least, however the way the civil conflict was being waged was absolutely abhorrent and no civilized society could sit by and just allow this to continue unabated.

As such the Liberal Alliance had briefly designed a simple amendment. Some words were being changed to exclude the bits about international law and Arizixilega's sovereignty being broken while maintaining the condemnation of the unilateral intervention by Fydoria and the atrocities being committed. Upon getting the final touches on the amendment Alexia stood before the chamber and spoke, "On behalf of the Liberal Alliance, I, Alexia Lascari do hereby propose the following amendment to the Prime Minister's resolution.

Amendment II

Article and Title: Preambulatory Clause III

Currently Reads AsWhereas Fydoria has engaged in unacceptable military intervention in Arizixilega, violating the tenets of national sovereignty and international law;

Proposed Amendment: Whereas Fydoria has engaged in unacceptable unilateral military intervention in Arizixilega, violating the established international precedents of multilateral intervention;

Rationale: Would acknowledge that Fydoria has intervened at the behest of the Arizixilega government while also acknowledging that the established precedents on the international stage are for a multilateral approach to such crises.

Article and Title: Operative Clause I

Currently Reads As: The intervention of Fydoria into the internal affairs of Arizixilega is a flagrant violation of international law and runs contrary to the values upheld by Selene and the Artemian Union.

Proposed Amendment: Removing the Clause completely

Rationale: While the acts by Fydoria are contrary to hte values upheld by Selene and the Artemian Union, the Fydorian intervention is not in violation of international law as they were asked to help by the legitimate Arizixilegan government.

Presented by: the Honorable, Alexia Lascari

Alexia then decided to add a bit of a speech to explain the general LA rationale behind the amendment. "While the Liberal Alliance supports the Prime Minister and the government, we wish to have the resolution clarified to remove the portions about international law and sovereignty. As it stands Fydoria is intervening in Arizixilega at the behest of the legitimate government there. I share the same sentiments as the Prime Minister that this intervention is concerning. This intervention is also exacerbating the crisis and causing suffering on a large scale for the people there." She took a breath before continuing on, "As such we hope the Prime Minister and the Selenids United Party choose to endorse this amendment so that the Liberal Alliance can thus support the Resolution in full and without reservations. Thank you." She said taking her seat. This was not something she wished would have occurred but she could not in good faith and conscious support the amendment as it stood.
