[IC] The Great Meeting

#31

Afgurla
----------------

A large military truck, painted in white camouflage, soon met the group at the entrance to the air field. It's guns had been removed by a machinist for practical reasons, and to avoid any potential misunderstanding, though the large gun ports looked conspicuously empty.

The drive to Afgurla was beautifully scenic. Strict property use controls had left the area very rural and unpopulated. The scenic drive saw the beautiful meadows of the area, as well as many raised farms that towered above the rivers that laced the area.

"To protect our crops from flooding" The general explained and even pointed out the windmills that were used to irrigate the fields.

"Procellia is a socialist country, and due to our excellent central planning we always have enough to eat. We take great pride in our efficient use of the land."

As they crossed the lowlands a large pillar started coming into view, surrounded by the glittering ocean. As they got closer it was revealed to be a stunning city built on a massive island at the mouth of a bay. The island was ringed by massive walls, stuccoed a brilliant white that glittered in the light of the afternoon sun. However tall the walls were they were dwarfed by the massive city behind them.

Gleaming skyscrapers, of every shape and size one could imagine towered above the walls as if they were nothing more than a garden wall. Every single building was designed to awe, many featuring massive artwork, or modern forms such as spirals and even a pyramid.

"Welcome to Afgurla." The general said with pride

The truck came to a stop at a massive structure built on a bluff overlooking the ocean and City. The depot, for that is what it was, gleamed of polished steel and gold colored windows. The building had obviously been built with the intention to awe, and the effect had been met.

The truck drove along one of the many roads that spiraled through and around the megalith, finally parking along a drop off area which was packed to the brim with Procellians, all wearing various robes and capes in colors that would make a jewel envious.

"Your majesty from here we will be taking a train, as vehicles are not allowed inside of the city. As a matter of fact the 12:36 to the castle leaves in about 20 minutes."

Cussing loudly the traffic control officer exclaimed "Oh for fucks sake don't people wait for follow up letters?"

Taking a moment to regain her composure she consulted with a private who informed her the aircraft was armed. Swearing again she said

"Prepare the anti aircraft guns just in case. If à single thing comes out of that plane I want it wasted."

Grabbing the translator and mic she broadcast "Attention Boredomo aircraft we have determined your plane is armed. Please fly to the base using the route we provide, you are being monitored, repeat you are being monitored."

Turning off the mic she had the map reader, a rather bored looking Sergent, make and broadcast a route that would force the plane to fly a full 50 miles around Afgurla so that the only things that could be affected if they were hostile were the base and the countryside that made up most of the province. And all along that route were outposts armed with antiaircraft guns aimed right at the incoming plane.

-------------------------------------

"Is the vice base commander available?" The private asked with a sigh as he received a negative response. Private Kurlag was a young boy of 18 and like most new recruits he had been put in a position that was traditionally a slacker job, foreign relations. With no foreign relations to be had his days would normally consist of reading regulations about his field, which was boring but certainly not stressful.

Now he was stressed, very stressed. There was a fully armed war machine from another nation sitting on the runway, and their leader was so bored he was now sitting in a chair that had been brought down from the plane. Shit Oh shit he was in trouble if this went any worse.

He was desperately trying to work his way down the chain of command to find someone to meet the delegation, but all the high ranking officials had either went with the first visitors, or were not anywhere on base (it would be just his luck that this shit would happen on a weekend)

He was about halfway down the list of commanders before he finally found one that was already in uniform and could be in formal dress within a reasonable time, it was some captain of munitions who had decided to give his unit a surprise dress uniform inspection before work started the next day.

-------

It took a full half an hour before Captain Sudrez was on the flight line, followed by about thirty of his munitions troops armed to the teeth.

He turned his head awkwardly, as he tried to speak into the translator he'd been unceremoniously handed by a panicked private.

"Welcome to Procellia I am Captain Sudrez" he said standing at attention and barking the phrase like an order. He was not one for subtlety and like most Procellians from his region he was very to the point, à trait that had served him well thus far.

Military Base, Procellia
--------------------------------------

The Captain crossed his arms, looking sternly at the soldiers coming down the stairs.

"Mr. Ambassador, how many of your heavily armed troops do you plan on bringing into one of our major cities? Even the police in Procellia do not carry guns, much less into a crowded city full of civilians who could panic at the sight of what appears to be a squadrons worth of foreign troops armed as if to invade us"

"His majesty said guards are permitted, and six is reasonable. But please choose wisely ma'am" the Captain said, his tone not threatening, but still powerful.

From behind him, came forward six troops who stood beside him "I hate to ask this of you ma'am, but I'd like to offer you six Procellian guards as well. Perhaps the people will be less alarmed if each of your guards is with a member of our fine military?"

Palazzo Malzo

Council President Marco Valerio sant on his desk, and promptly noticed that Foreign Councillor Grazia Marelli was sitting in one of the couches to the left. He closed his eyes for a few seconds, trying to rest them after what was turning out to be a very hectic evening, but soon after he got up and walked towards the couch. Marelli stood up, but Valerio waved dismissively, indicating that they should both sit. He was well aware that everyone stood when the Council President entered a room, but he found no use for such fancy traditions, and preferred to keep a simple work environment when possible.

"Hey Grazia. What can I do for you?"

"Mr President, I'm sorry to bother you with the issue of the infiltrators, but I need to know what will be our answer to Procellia and to the letter from Sylon."

"Ah, yes." Valerio smirked. "I have to admit, after talking with Sergeant Vemel, after getting an idea of the attitude that Procellia displays towards other nations, I'm more incline to heed the advice of Sylon. If we have a nation willing to send in their military whenever they feel like it, steps have to be taken to ensure our safety." He paused for a few seconds. "Are we sure Selene is off the table?"

Marelli shook her head. "I've been in touch with Emperor Justinian, and he is adamant that Selene would honour its treaty commitment if it came to war, but it will otherwise remain neutral in any international conflict. He said it was time for us to take the mantle."

"They had to choose this particular time to withdraw from international affairs." Valerio sighed. "Alright, we'll have to make do with what we have. I'll get in touch with Procellia, to see what's the deal with the infiltrators. I want you to reply to Sylon, asking for a ministerial-level meeting to discuss our security situation, but make sure that this is all kept secret. We don't need to let the whole world know."

In the next few minutes, two letters were sent:

Ufficio del Presidente del Consiglio
Risposta sulla Invitazione del Governo di Procellia

I write to express the discomfort of Sartoria over the actions of the Procellian Government. Tonight we aprehended a small group of individuals who claim to be members of your military, and whose allegiance has been duly verified. They infiltrated our territory and made their way to our capital, claiming to operate under direct orders from you. Their entry had been detected, but this does not excuse what we consider to be a serious breach of our territorial integrity.

I ask on behalf of the Sartorian Government that Procellia offer explanations on this matter and apologises for this detrimental action, one that jeopardises the prospects of good faith negotiations at the impending summit.

Marco Valerio
Presidente del Consiglio, Principato di Sartoria

Ufficio del Consigliere degli Affari Esteri
Risposta sulla Communicazione Ufficiale

In response to you previous communication, the Sartorian Government is interested in a bilateral meeting in the near future to discuss our security situation and the steps that can be taken to ensure both Sartoria and Sylon can mutually guarantee their territorial integrity and diplomatic weight.

I eagerly wait for your answer, and respectfully ask that this communication be treated with the utmost discretion.

Grazia Marelli
Consigliere degli Affari Esteri, Principato di Sartoria
